The law demands that you hold a current report of Thorough Examination.
The HSE states "Thorough examination of industrial lift trucks is required under health and safety law: LOLER 1998, which covers lifting equipment, and PUWER 1998, which deals with all other safety-related items, such as brakes, steering and tyres. Your regular inspections as part of a preventive maintenance scheme or scheduled service are not a thorough examination."
- If you own a Telehandler outright, you as the owner, are responsible for arranging a regular Thorough Examination appropriate to the truck and its use. Commonly, Telehandlers are every 12 months and attachments for those machines are every 6 months.
- If you are hiring a Telehandler on a long-term basis (12-months or more), you have the same responsibility as if you were to own the telehandler outright and the duties fall upon the employer of the operator to arrange Thorough Examinations.
- If you are hiring a Telehandler on a short-term basis (1 day – a Year), the hire company is responsible for arranging the Thorough Examination.
